I first heard about TLF through buzz around my school. I wanted to apply to the scholarship because I believe that my personal mission aligns with that of TLF. I believe in TLF’s mission because it is our duty as future advertisers or PR personnel to shape the way that advertising is being done. We have to take the bull by the horns and create the change that we want to see. With this scholarship, I am now able to pay for some of my Master’s degree.
Once I earn my degree, I hope to open a marketing and brand management consulting firm that specializes in educating brands on how to properly appeal to and be a voice for underrepresented groups. I want to pursue these goals because when I was younger I rarely saw people who looked like me and this caused an early identity crisis. Bringing diversity into my field of work is important because daily consumption of one image further perpetuates the idea that there is only one reality of the “American family” and this simply is not the case.
Beyond receiving the scholarship, I want to continue to stay involved with TLF because I want to learn from those who came before me and help those who will follow me. I think the work TLF is doing is important because everyone needs a voice and who better to tell the story of minorities, than minorities?
I want to thank my family and friends for being my support system and helping me get to where I am today.
